KELSO LAVENDER

Now that my kiddo is out of school we’ve started up our Wednesday adventures again. Something born out of the darkest days of Covid, when working from home and full time child caring was mentally burning both of us out. Our adventures consisted of anything really, trip to the post office to mail out drawings for her great grandmother, eating in the car after picking up A&W, or in the summer, grander outdoor adventures like berry picking, the beach, zoo etc. I even started documenting our Wednesday adventures on my TikTok.

For our first Wednesday adventure of 2022 we visited Kelso Lavender, the other way less expensive & less crowded lavender farm in Milton. Look, I’m not dissing the other farm but given how inflated the cost of living is we all need price friendly options for family, or hanging with friends, fun. Admission for adults is $12 and kids are $8. You pre-book your tickets online for a specific entry time.

Kelso Lavender isn’t as large as Terre but their fields are stunning and still quite expansive. Also, call me crazy but I think because their field is smaller and more condensed you can really smell the lavender. I don’t remember being able to smell lavender when I visited Terre. The way their field is laid out you’re surrounded by the lavender as far as the eye can see. This family run farm has both French and English lavender on-site, no pick your own but their onsite shop has fresh picked bouquets or potted lavender to buy at great prices among other lavender goodies. I bought both a bundle of dried and a fresh potted lavender.

They have cute white & purple Muskoka chairs set up in primo photo opp spots around the field and a few outside of the field if you needed a pit stop. My kiddo and I sat in one under a tree and enjoyed some snacks amongst the lavender. They also have picnic tables on site if you packed a little lunch or wanted to enjoy one of their homemade lavender popsicles. I thought we’d share one and my kiddo ended up eating pretty much the entire lavender lemonade popsicle herself!

A few things to consider when planning your trip to Kelso Lavender, the field itself is quite a steep incline/hill. This would make it a little difficult for mom’s with strollers or anyone handicapped or with a disability that required a mobility aid. With that being said there are spots on the outer edges of the lavender fields that can be easily accessed, so you’d still definitely enjoy the lavender.

Bees. Lots of them enjoying the lavender just like us. My kiddo and I love bees and happily watched them at work, they didn’t disturb us at all but we left them alone as well. If you have a bee allergy please travel with your epipen as shit happens and you don’t want to be in a remote spot having a severe allergic reaction if you got stung. If you’re afraid of bees maybe not your place to go, but that would be the same for any flower field you’d visit.

No shield from the sun, it’s an open field so plan for a cloudier day like when we went otherwise bring a hat and wear your sunscreen!

Since it is a smaller field, it only takes about 2 hours to enjoy but the farm is in such an awesome location that you can make your way over to either, Hilton Falls (less than a 3 min drive away), Kelso Park & Beach (probably 5 min drive away, if that?) or even Robert Edmondson Park, which is maybe a 10ish minute drive.

As of the posting of this blog, you only have maybe two weeks left of lavender to see! It’ll start being harvested probably second week of August so get out there ASAP and if you go definitely try the Lavender Lemonade popsicle!
